Nugaal Valley
Nugaal Region, Somalia
The Nugaal Valley, also known as the Nogal Valley, is a long, broad, shallow drainage basin in northeastern Somalia, stretching about 250 kilometers along the seasonal Wadi Nugaal in the Nugaal (Nugal) region.
It is bounded to the north by the Nugal Plateau and to the south by the ‘Iid and Hawd plains, with a narrow strip of low‑lying coastal land to the east and higher plateaus sloping up to around 500–1,000 meters on the north, west, and south.
The valley has an arid, pastoral landscape where low and erratic rainfall—roughly 100–150 millimeters per year—and often saline soils make crop cultivation difficult and favor extensive livestock‑keeping over farming. Watercourses such as the Nugaal and Togdheer rivers flow only briefly during and after storms in the rainy seasons, draining into the Somali Sea, and the area is dotted with seasonal watercourses and permanent wells that support nomadic and semi‑nomadic herding of camels, goats, and sheep.
The Nugaal Valley spans parts of several regions in Somalia and Somaliland, serving as a key traditional grazing zone for Somali pastoral communities and a central feature of the region’s ecology and livelihoods.
