The Nyika Plateau forms a vast, rolling highland straddling northern Malawi and Zambia's Eastern Province near the border, with Zambia's portion encompassing about 250 square kilometers protected within Nyika National Park at elevations averaging 2,000-2,600 meters, featuring undulating grasslands, pine groves, and rocky outcrops that contrast sharply with surrounding lowlands.

This diamond-shaped tilted granite block, rising dramatically above Lake Malawi and the Luangwa Valley, supports unique montane flora like orchids, delphiniums, lobelias, and red hot pokers alongside antelope herds such as roan, eland, and zebra, plus leopards and diverse birds in its cool, misty climate ideal for hiking and scenic drives.

The remote Zambian section near Isoka offers pristine wilderness with minimal infrastructure, drawing adventurers for its wildflower meadows and fossil-rich landscapes preserved since ancient geological times.​
