Odrzykoń
Poland, Poland
Odrzykoń is a village in southeastern Poland's Subcarpathian Voivodeship, near Krosno in Gmina Wojaszówka, renowned for the ruins of Kamieniec Castle perched on a rocky hill above the Wisłok River valley.
Traces of a prehistoric Lusatian culture settlement and early medieval Slavic gord precede the wooden castle destroyed by Tatar invasions in 1241 and 1259, replaced mid-14th century by King Casimir the Great with a stone Gothic fortress of irregular outline adapted to the terrain, guarding trade routes from Hungary via Dukla Pass.
First documented in 1348 as Kamieniec under burgrave Mikołaj z Babic, it inspired Aleksander Fredro's famous comedy Zemsta amid noble feuds between Firlej and Opaliński families, suffering destruction in 1657 by Rakoczi's forces before falling into picturesque decay as a popular tourist site.
