Opoczno
Poland, Poland
Opoczno is a town in central Poland's Łódź Voivodeship, situated at the confluence of the Wąglanka and Drzewiczka rivers as a key road and rail junction with a population of around 21,000.
First mentioned in 1284 and granted town rights around 1360 under King Casimir III the Great—who relocated it southwest to a walled "New Town" of 6 hectares—it thrived as a medieval trade hub on routes from Kyiv to Wrocław and Toruń to Sandomierz, bolstered by a hospital in 1405 and waterworks in 1550.
Devastated by fire in 1462 and nearly obliterated during the 1655 Swedish Deluge with only 15 houses surviving, it endured partitions, uprisings, and world wars before emerging as a center famed for ceramics manufacturing, folklore, and Saint Cecilia as its patron.
