Orneta is a historic town in northern Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, located in the region of Warmia.
First mentioned in 1308, the town developed from an ancient Old Prussian village and was officially granted town rights in 1313 by the Warmian bishop Eberhard von Neiße. Orneta played a role in the medieval politics of the region, joining the anti-Teutonic Prussian Confederation and later becoming part of the Kingdom of Poland in the 15th century.
The famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus visited the town in 1538. Orneta was annexed by Prussia in the late 18th century and became part of Germany before returning to Poland after World War II. Today, it is a small town with rich cultural heritage, surrounded by many villages and known for its historical architecture and local traditions.
