Osiek
Poland, Poland
Osiek is a town in south-central Poland's Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Staszów County, located along the Opatówka River valley roughly 25 km east of Staszów and 70 km southeast of Kielce.
First mentioned in 1253 as a trading settlement under Bolesław V the Chaste, it received town rights in 1363 and flourished as a royal hub with a defensive castle hosting monarchs like Leszek Black and Casimir the Great.
Known for its 16th-17th century commerce and crafts with a population peaking near 1,000, it lost urban status after the 1869 uprising until 1994, featuring Poland's only active open-pit sulfur mine, a historic parish church of St. Stanisław, and preserved market traditions.
