Otmuchów Castle
Otmuchów, Poland, Poland
Otmuchów Castle is a historic bishop's fortress in Otmuchów, southwestern Poland's Opole Voivodeship, overlooking the Nysa Kłodzka River valley with roots tracing to the 12th century when Pope Hadrian IV granted the site to the Bishopric of Wrocław.
Rebuilt in the late Gothic style around 1484-1485 by Bishop Jan IV Roth and expanded in the 14th century by Bishop Przecław of Pogarell into a defensive complex linked to town walls, it transitioned to Renaissance under Bishop Andrzej Jerin in the late 16th century and Baroque in the 17th, featuring thick walls, a northern rectangular tower, arcaded cloisters, and horse-accessible stairs added by Bishop Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg.
Damaged during the Thirty Years' War, Prussian shelling in 1741, and later dismantled with two wings removed by 1823 after secularization, the surviving northern and eastern four-story wings now form a cultural center amid a scenic park.
