Paleet
Oslo, Norway, Norway
Paleet in Oslo, Norway, originally known as Paléet, was a grand Baroque-style townhouse built in stages between 1744-45 and 1755-58 by wealthy merchant Christian Ancher at what is now Fred. Olsens gate 6 near Oslo Central Station, overlooking a public garden called Paléhaven that extended to Bjørvika's shores. Bequeathed by his son Bernt Anker in 1805 to the Norwegian state and royal family, it served as a key royal residence in Christiania—used by viceroys, King Christian Frederick in 1814, and later Swedish-Norwegian kings like Charles XIV John, who expanded it with Empire-style interiors—until the Royal Palace's completion in 1848. Later housing officials, Norway's Supreme Court from 1893-1903, government offices, and even Hirden during World War II, it burned down on May 14, 1942, and was demolished, leaving only traces of its park incorporated into modern surroundings.
