Pantanal Matogrossense National Park, located in the heart of the Pantanal biome, is a vast and ecologically rich sanctuary in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Established in 1981, the park spans over 135,000 hectares and forms part of the world’s largest tropical wetland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

This immense floodplain, shaped by the seasonal rhythms of the Paraguay River and its tributaries, supports an extraordinary diversity of life and is considered one of the most wildlife-dense regions on the planet. The park’s landscape is a mosaic of flooded grasslands, gallery forests, and meandering waterways, creating ideal habitats for a wide array of species.

It is a stronghold for iconic and endangered animals such as the jaguar, giant otter, marsh deer, giant anteater, and hyacinth macaw. Over 650 bird species have been recorded here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers. The Cuiabá River, which flows through the park, serves as a lifeline for both wildlife and the traditional communities that live along its banks.

Access to the park is limited and often requires travel by boat or small aircraft, which helps preserve its pristine condition. While it lacks a formal visitor center, the park offers opportunities for guided ecotourism, scientific research, and environmental education.
