Verified Parkwood National Historic Site

Oshawa, Canada

Parkwood National Historic Site in Oshawa, Canada, was the grand estate of Colonel Robert Samuel McLaughlin, founder and president of General Motors of Canada, built between 1915 and 1917.

The mansion, designed by the prominent Toronto architectural firm Darling and Pearson, is a 15,000 square foot, 55-room Beaux-Arts style residence reflecting early 20th-century luxury and craftsmanship, featuring elegant interior decorations and original furnishings.

The 12-acre grounds were developed over 55 years by McLaughlin and his wife Adelaide, showcasing a rich blend of formal gardens, terraces, water features, and recreational amenities, many designed by well-known landscape architects H.B. and L.A. Dunington-Grubb.

The estate is one of the best-preserved examples of Canadian interwar architecture and landscape design and highlights the family's leadership role in the automotive industry and Canadian society. Now open to the public as a museum and cultural site, Parkwood offers tours, educational programs, and events that immerse visitors in the lavish lifestyle and history of a prominent Canadian industrial family.
