Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, is the home of Canada’s federal government and an important national symbol. The site features a collection of striking Gothic Revival-style buildings, including the Centre Block, which houses the House of Commons and Senate chambers, along with the East and West Blocks used for government offices.

Construction began in 1859 after Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital, and the buildings were officially opened in 1866. A fire in 1916 destroyed much of the original Centre Block, except for the Library of Parliament, and the current Centre Block was completed in 1927 with the iconic Peace Tower added as a memorial to Canadian soldiers.

The location, originally called Barrack Hill, was chosen for its commanding views over the Ottawa River and its central role in the city. Parliament Hill’s open grounds are rare among national legislatures and frequently serve as a space for celebrations, protests, and public gatherings. The buildings’ architectural style was selected to reflect parliamentary democracy’s historical roots and create a stately presence fitting for Canada’s government.

Today, Parliament Hill continues to be the political heart of Canada and a key site for citizens, tourists, and official ceremonies.
