Pasłęk
Poland, Poland
Pasłęk is a historic town in northern Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Elbląg County, situated on the Pasłęka River near the Vistula Lagoon and Pojezierze Iławskie lakeland, with around 12,000 residents.
Founded at the end of the 13th century by Teutonic Knights on a Prussian settlement site called Paslok or Pāistlauks, it was granted commercial rights in 1297 as Holland (later Preußisch Holland) after Dutch settlers, featuring a brick castle rebuilt around 1320-1339 adjacent to defensive town walls.
The town shifted between Teutonic, Polish (as a fief post-1466 Toruń Peace), and Prussian control, endured Swedish occupation in 1626 when King Gustavus Adolphus resided in the castle, suffered 80% destruction in World War II, and now preserves Gothic church remnants and market square architecture.
