Peter II Castle
Guingamp, France, France
Peter II Castle (Château de Pierre II) is a historic medieval fortress in the town of Guingamp, Brittany, in northwestern France.
The site has origins dating back to the 11th century and occupies a strategic hill overlooking the Trieux Valley, making it an important defensive stronghold for centuries. The current castle was largely built in the 15th century under Peter II, Duke of Brittany, and was designed as an artillery fortress with strong walls and large round towers.
It formed part of Guingamp’s defensive system before being dismantled on the orders of King Louis XIII in 1626. Today, the remaining walls and towers are protected as a historic monument and offer visitors insight into the region’s medieval past. Archaeological excavations have helped reveal the castle’s long history, making it one of Guingamp’s most significant heritage sites.
