Pettingen Castle is a historic medieval fortress located in the village of Pettingen, about 4 kilometers north of Mersch in central Luxembourg. Originally known as “Pittigero Mazini” in the 10th century, it became an important stronghold associated with influential noble families who played significant roles in Luxembourg’s medieval history. The castle was rebuilt in the early 16th century after earlier destruction and later strengthened with four corner towers. In 1684, it suffered heavy damage during a bombardment by the forces of Louis XIV, leaving it largely in the ruined condition seen today. Despite its partial ruin, Pettingen Castle remains one of Luxembourg’s best-preserved fortified castles. Visitors can still see substantial sections of its walls and surviving round towers, which reflect the castle’s former strength and importance. The site is open to the public and offers a glimpse into the country’s rich medieval heritage.
