Pingyao Ancient City in Shanxi Province is one of China’s most remarkably preserved walled towns, a living museum of Ming and Qing dynasty urban life. Founded in the 14th century, it was once the financial heart of the Qing Empire, home to China’s first banks, including the pioneering Rishengchang Draft Bank.

Within its 6,000-meter-long city walls, Pingyao retains its original street grid, over 300 historic sites, and nearly 4,000 traditional courtyard homes, many still inhabited today. The city’s layout follows a ba gua (eight trigrams) pattern, with six gates and 72 watchtowers symbolizing Confucius’s disciples.

Its architecture is a time capsule of Han Chinese design, gray-tiled roofs, carved wooden facades, and stone-paved alleys that echo with centuries of commerce, ritual, and daily life. Highlights include the Ancient Government Office, the Temple of the City God, and the bustling Ming and Qing Street, once dubbed “China’s Wall Street.”

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pingyao is more than a relic, it’s a vibrant, lived-in city where history breathes through every brick and beam.
