Piotrków Trybunalski Royal Castle
Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland, Poland
Piotrków Trybunalski Royal Castle is a Gothic-Renaissance tower residence in central Poland, constructed between 1512 and 1519 under King Sigismund I the Old by architect Benedykt of Sandomierz on the site of a medieval manor possibly from Casimir the Great's era, measuring 18x20 meters on an earthen mound with a moat.
Designed as a prestigious royal lodging for parliamentary sessions, it features a four-story layout with erratic stone ground floor, brick upper levels, sandstone quoins and portals blending Gothic and Renaissance styles, progressively larger windows upward, a vaulted stone staircase, and originally a decorated attic under a gable roof.
Burned during the 1655 Swedish Deluge, it was rebuilt in 1668-1671 with a pavilion roof but later served as prison and church quarters, with 19th-century demolitions leaving the core structure now housing a museum of archaeological finds.
