Playa Chatarra, which translates to "Scrap Iron Beach," is a world-famous surfing beach located in Loíza on Puerto Rico's north shore, just a short drive from the San Juan metropolitan area.

This beach is renowned as one of the most consistent and best surfing spots in the Caribbean, famous for its powerful left-hand reef break that produces fast, hollow waves and "great tubes" that attract experienced surfers from around the globe. The waves break on shallow lava reef just a few feet from shore, creating challenging conditions that are only suitable for advanced to expert surfers, with winter months (November to February) bringing the largest swells and best Surf conditions.

The beach features golden sands with rocky outcrops, is surrounded by pristine mangrove forests that provide habitat for birds, crabs, and marine life, and maintains a rugged, unspoiled natural charm with limited formal amenities. Playa Chatarra is free to the public with parking available along PR-187 directly in front of the beach, and visitors can enjoy nearby kiosks serving authentic Puerto Rican cuisine in the vibrant Afro-Caribbean cultural community of Loíza.

Important safety notes include the absence of lifeguards, sharp coral and rocks underwater requiring protective reef booties, mosquitoes near the mangroves needing insect repellent, and swimming/surfing being entirely at your own risk.
