Porto de Galinhas, nestled along the coast of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, is a tropical haven celebrated for its crystalline waters, natural tide pools, and vibrant coral reefs. Its name, which translates to “Port of Chickens,” has roots in colonial-era code words used during the clandestine slave trade, adding a layer of historical depth to its sunny shores. The town’s main attraction is its series of natural pools, or “piscinas naturais,” formed by coral reefs just offshore. At low tide, visitors can take traditional wooden rafts called jangadas out to these pools to snorkel among colorful fish in warm, transparent waters.

The beaches themselves are postcard-perfect, with highlights like Praia de Muro Alto, known for its calm lagoon-like waters, and Praia de Maracaípe, a favorite among surfers for its strong waves and golden sands. The region also supports marine conservation efforts, including the Projeto Hippocampus, which focuses on the preservation of seahorses native to the area.
