Porto de Galinhas, nestled along the coast of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, is a tropical haven celebrated for its crystalline waters, natural tide pools, and vibrant coral reefs.

Located in the municipality of Ipojuca, about 60 kilometers south of Recife, this once-sleepy fishing village has transformed into one of Brazil’s most beloved beach destinations. Its name, which translates to “Port of Chickens,” has roots in colonial-era code words used during the clandestine slave trade, adding a layer of historical depth to its sunny shores.

The town’s main attraction is its series of natural pools, or “piscinas naturais,” formed by coral reefs just offshore. At low tide, visitors can take traditional wooden rafts called jangadas out to these pools to snorkel among colorful fish in warm, transparent waters. The beaches themselves are postcard-perfect, with highlights like Praia de Muro Alto, known for its calm lagoon-like waters, and Praia de Maracaípe, a favorite among surfers for its strong waves and golden sands.
