Praia do Forte, located on the north coast of Bahia about 80 kilometers from Salvador, is a captivating blend of natural beauty, ecological preservation, and cultural heritage. Once a humble fishing village, it has evolved into a vibrant beach destination while retaining its rustic charm and environmental consciousness.

The coastline is dotted with idyllic beaches like Porto Beach, known for its long stretches of sand and the iconic Igrejinha chapel, and Praia do Lord, famous for its natural tide pools that emerge during low tide. These calm, clear waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing under the tropical sun.

One of the most significant attractions is the Tamar Project, a pioneering sea turtle conservation initiative headquartered in Praia do Forte. Visitors can learn about marine life and witness the protection efforts for endangered turtle species, making it both an educational and inspiring experience. Nearby, the Sapiranga Ecological Reserve offers trails through Atlantic Forest remnants, where adventurers can explore mangroves, dunes, and diverse flora and fauna.

The area is also a seasonal haven for humpback whales, which migrate to the warm coastal waters between July and October to breed and give birth. The village itself is a charming mix of cobbled streets, artisan shops, and open-air restaurants serving Bahian delicacies like moqueca and acarajé. Local crafts, especially those made from braided piassava straw, reflect the region’s cultural identity.

Overlooking the sea is the historic Garcia d’Ávila Tower House, a 16th-century fortress that once belonged to one of the largest landowners in colonial Brazil and stands as the only medieval-style structure in Latin America.
