Princess Grace Japanese Garden
Larvotto, Monaco
The Princess Grace Japanese Garden is a tranquil 0.7-hectare municipal park located on Avenue Princesse Grace in the Larvotto ward of Monaco, right next to the Grimaldi Forum convention centre and just steps from Larvotto Beach. Created in 1994 at the request of Prince Rainier III as a tribute to his late wife, Princess Grace Kelly, the garden was designed by renowned Japanese landscape architect Yasuo Beppu, winner of the 1990 Osaka Flower Exhibition, and represents a miniature version of Shintoist philosophy and Zen thought. Within its 7,000 square meters, visitors discover classic Japanese garden elements including a pond with koi carp and water lilies, a stylized mountain and hill, a waterfall, a small beach, a brook, stone lanterns, wooden and stone bridges, a teahouse, and a Zen garden for meditation, all arranged to create an atmosphere conducive to contemplation. The garden beautifully blends imported Japanese materials like timber, lanterns, and tiles with Mediterranean plants, reflecting collaboration between Monégasque and Japanese gardeners, and it is open daily from 9:00 AM until sunset with free admission.
