Ranton is a small commune located in the Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of western France. It is a peaceful rural village surrounded by rolling plains and fields, crossed by the Dive river.

The commune is part of a region known for its historic sites and natural landscapes, lying close to several notable towns such as Moncontour and Thouars. Ranton is home to Château de Ranton, a small fortified castle built in the mid-14th century during the Hundred Years' War to defend the city of Loudun.

The castle later became a feudal manor estate associated with French nobility and was rebuilt in Renaissance style in the 16th century. It played roles during the French Wars of Religion and survived both Cardinal Richelieu’s campaigns and the French Revolution. The castle was gradually restored after falling into ruin by the 20th century and is now one of the most complete 14th-century fortresses in the region.

The chapel in the castle, dedicated to St. Leonard, has been significant as a pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages. Today, Ranton maintains its quiet village charm with historical significance tied to its medieval heritage.
