Reszel Castle
Reszel, Poland, Poland
Reszel Castle is a Gothic fortress in Reszel, northeastern Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, built by Warmia bishops between 1350 and 1401 on a site first fortified by Teutonic Knights in 1241 atop a hill overlooking the Sajna River valley.
Featuring a rectangular 45x48-meter plan with brick walls, four wings around a courtyard, a chapel with stellar vaulting, corner towers including a powerful cylindrical one, cloisters, and integrated town defenses enhanced by 16th-century half-round towers and a gatehouse, it served as an episcopal residence and frontier stronghold.
Damaged by fires in 1806-1807, it functioned as a prison—site of Europe’s last witch burning in 1811—church, and now a hotel with a museum gallery after postwar restoration.
