Verified Roquetaillade

France, France

Château de Roquetaillade is a remarkable medieval castle located in Mazères near Bordeaux, France, known for being inhabited by the same family for over 700 years since 1306.

The site was originally fortified by a wooden castle built by Charlemagne in the 8th century, though nothing remains of that early structure. The current stone castle, called the "New Castle," was constructed in 1306 by Gaillard de la Mothe, nephew of Pope Clement V, and features a square layout with six towers and a central keep, showcasing advanced medieval military architecture similar to Edwardian castles in North Wales.

In 1599, Renaissance modifications added windows and elegant living spaces, and in the 19th century, renowned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc restored and enhanced the interiors with unique decorative art blending Gothic and Art Nouveau styles.

The castle has been open to the public since 1956 and remains fully furnished with period decorations. It includes historical features such as ramparts, towers, a chapel with Moresque decorations, and a working farm with traditional animals. The château is a classified historical monument and one of the most visited castles in the Bordeaux region, offering guided tours that showcase its rich history and architecture.
