Royal Botanical Gardens
Burlington, Canada, Canada
Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is Canada’s largest botanical garden, spanning over 2,400 acres across Hamilton and Burlington, Ontario, at the western edge of Lake Ontario.
Designated a National Historic Site in 1994, it originated in the late 1920s and was formally created by an Ontario Act in 1941, developing as a unique collection of themed gardens, an arboretum, and a massive 800-hectare wildlife conservation area within an urban setting.
The garden features 130 acres of cultivated gardens with more than 6,600 unique plant types and 242,000 individual plants, including the world-renowned Katie Osborne Lilac Garden, which holds the largest living lilac collection and serves as the international registration authority for lilac names.
Visitors can explore four distinct formal gardens like the 22-acre Hendrie Park with its 55,000 plants and sculpture collection, the historic Rock Garden opened in 1932, and enjoy 27 kilometers of nature trails through diverse ecosystems including wetlands, woodlands, and meadows. RBG hosts year-round events such as Concerts in the Garden and RBG After Dark, making it Ontario’s top destination for nature experiences and garden exploration.
