Royal Castle
Warsaw, Mazowieckie, Poland
The Royal Castle in Warsaw is a grand historical building located in the heart of Warsaw, in Castle Square at the entrance to the Old Town. It was once the official residence of Polish kings and a center for government and culture in Poland. Today, it stands as a symbol of the country’s endurance and history, serving as a museum and hosting official state events.
The history of the castle begins in the 14th century when the first castle tower was built. Over time, it was expanded and remodeled to fit the changing needs of its royal residents. In the early 1600s, it became the main seat of the Polish king and parliament, replacing Wawel Castle in Kraków. The castle was built in several styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and later, neoclassical, as different architects added to its structure.
Throughout its long past, the Royal Castle witnessed many important moments in Polish history. One notable event was the drafting of the Constitution of 3 May 1791, which took place here and was the first constitution of its kind in Europe. The castle also served as the office for Polish presidents after the country regained its independence in the early 20th century.
During World War II, the Royal Castle was badly damaged. It was bombed in 1939 and then completely destroyed by German forces in 1944 after the Warsaw Uprising. Only small parts, such as some wall fragments, cellars, and the nearby Copper-Roof Palace, survived the destruction.
After the war, the Polish people began rebuilding the castle. Reconstruction started in 1971 and was finished in 1984, using old plans, paintings, and photographs to restore it to its former glory. The castle and Warsaw Old Town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, highlighting their cultural and historical value.
