Verified Ruins of Karpenstein Castle

Lądek-Zdrój, Poland, Poland

Ruins of Karpenstein Castle (Polish: Zamek Karpień) are atmospheric Gothic remnants perched on Karpiak Mountain at 758 meters elevation near Lądek-Zdrój in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, guarding the historic Salt Road trade route through Karpow Pass.

Built in the early 14th century—possibly under Czech King John of Luxembourg on a prehistoric gród site—it protected merchants transporting precious salt amid Bohemian borderlands until Hussite Wars destruction in 1428 and 1431, followed by robber baron Hynko Krušina's occupation.

Raided again in 1443 by Silesian forces and finally razed in 1513 by Lądek burghers, its stones were quarried for the town's spa buildings, leaving overgrown walls accessible today via blue and green hiking trails amid forested Golden Mountains.
