Ruiny Zamku Dybów i Gród Nieszawa w Toruniu
Toruń, Poland, Poland
Ruiny Zamku Dybów i Gród Nieszawa w Toruniu are the atmospheric ruins of a Gothic brick castle built between 1424 and 1428 on the left bank of the Vistula River in Toruń, Poland, by order of King Władysław II Jagiełło as a strategic customs post and seat for Polish starosts near the Teutonic border.
A thriving settlement called Nieszawa soon developed around it, sparking rivalry with nearby Toruń, whose citizens destroyed the site in 1431 with Teutonic help before it was rebuilt and changed hands multiple times, including during Polish-Teutonic peace talks in 1466.
Damaged by Swedish forces in 1656 and later used as a distillery after the partitions, the castle endured a French defense against Russians in 1813, leaving today’s impressive remnants of perimeter walls, a two-story gate tower, and fortifications that visitors can explore freely.
