Ruiny Zamku Golesz
Poland, Poland
Ruiny Zamku Golesz are the remnants of a 14th-century stone fortress built by Tyniec Benedictines on a 13th-century gród site near Krajowice in southeastern Poland's Podkarpackie Voivodeship, serving as an administrative hub and court for monastery lands along the Wisłoka River trade route to Hungary.
Granted to the monks by King Władysław Łokietek in 1319 amid disputes with the Bogoria knightly clan, it withstood a 1474 Hungarian raid led by Tomasz Tharczay but was rebuilt by Abbot Andrzej Ozga (1477-1487) and expanded in the 16th century before total destruction in 1657 by Transylvanian forces under Jerzy II Rakoczi during the Deluge.
Abandoned thereafter through partitions and local quarrying for building materials, the multi-part defensive-residential complex with economic facilities now lies in progressive ruin atop a hill, overlooking the scenic Golesz Nature Reserve.
