Ruiny zamku Smolec
Smolec, Poland, Poland
Ruiny zamku Smolec in Smolec, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, are remnants of a medieval defensive manor first documented in 1357 as a Gothic residential tower on an artificial island surrounded by a moat within a former Slavic gord, rebuilt in 1523 as a Renaissance water castle on a square plan with two wings.
Expanded in the 18th century with a Baroque western wing and further enclosed by a northern wing in 1850-1855 under the von Wallenberg-Pachaly family, adopting a neogothic style with machicolations, a dominant five-story gate tower, and unified facade details.
Damaged during World War II and nearly completely demolished by 1958 for building materials despite 1959 heritage listing, the ruins—now reduced to partial perimeter walls, tower fragments, and overgrown foundations—continue to deteriorate without conservation, though recent minor stabilization efforts offer faint hope amid their park-like setting.
