Ruiny Zamku Sobień
Poland, Poland
Ruiny Zamku Sobień are the remnants of a medieval defensive castle perched on a high hill in the Słonne Mountains near Manasterzec village in Poland's Subcarpathian Voivodeship, strategically positioned at the fork of the San River and its Sobienka tributary for optimal protection.
Built in the second half of the 14th century by King Casimir the Great on the site of an earlier 13th-century hillfort, it was gifted in 1389 to the Kmita noble family by King Władysław Jagiełło, who expanded it with residential quarters, a chapel by 1434, and perimeter walls, using it as their main seat until shifting to Lesko around 1512.
Repeated Hungarian raids in 1474 and 1512 caused severe damage, leading to its abandonment and gradual ruin, though today a viewing platform atop the irregular quadrangular ruins offers panoramic vistas of the surrounding Bieszczady landscape.
