Ruiny Zamku w Dzierzgoniu
Dzierzgoń, Poland, Poland
Ruiny Zamku w Dzierzgoniu are the remnants of a Teutonic Order stronghold on Zamkowa Hill in Dzierzgoń, northern Poland's Pomeranian Voivodeship, originally built starting in 1248 on an 11th-century Prussian gród site after the 1249 Treaty of Dzierzgoń, serving as a key commandry with expansions by the late 13th century.
The Gothic brick fortress endured Polish raids, falling without resistance to Władysław Jagiełło in 1410 post-Grunwald with vast spoils noted by Jan Długosz, burning again in 1414 during the Hunger War, and suffering near-total destruction in 1454 by rebelling burghers and retreating Knights amid the Thirteen Years' War.
Incorporated into Poland after the 1466 Second Peace of Toruń as a starosty seat, it decayed through 17th-century fires, partial use for records, and systematic dismantling for a Reformati monastery, leaving scant foundations by the 19th century when Prussian authorities leveled the site for a park topped by a 1930s water tower.
