Rusizi National Park, also known as Parc National de la Rusizi, is a compact wetland reserve located about 15 kilometers northwest of Bujumbura, Burundi’s largest city, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park lies along the Rusizi River and its delta where the river flows into Lake Tanganyika, forming a complex of permanent inland delta, freshwater lakes, marshes, and grassy floodplains. It is one of Burundi’s most visited and accessible national parks, popular for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and boat cruises that offer close looks at hippos, Nile crocodiles, sitatunga antelopes, monkeys, and a large variety of waterbirds, including many resident and migratory species. The Ramsar‑listed area also supports rich plant life, vital fish habitats, and local livelihoods such as fishing and small‑scale farming, while remaining a key destination for short safaris and nature walks from Bujumbura.
