Verified Sai Yok National Park

Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Sai Yok National Park is located in western Thailand, about 100 kilometers northwest of Kanchanaburi city. It sits near the border with Myanmar, in the Sai Yok District. The park covers an area of about 958 square kilometers and is part of a larger forest complex known as the Western Forest Complex, one of the biggest protected areas in Southeast Asia.

The park is famous for its natural beauty, with mountains, dense forests, caves, and waterfalls. One of the most popular waterfalls is Sai Yok Yai, which flows into the Khwae Noi River. Another is Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, also called Khao Phang Waterfall. Both are favorite spots for swimming, sightseeing, and picnics. The park also has caves, such as Lawa and Daowadueng Caves, filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Some of these caves are home to rare bats, like Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, which is thought to be the world’s smallest mammal.

The Khwae Noi River, also known as the River Kwai, runs through the park. Visitors can stay in floating raft houses along the river, which are popular for their relaxing views and closeness to nature. Activities in the park include hiking, boat trips, bird-watching, and exploring historical sites. There are trails near the visitor center, leading to viewpoints, small caves, springs, and remains of the Death Railway built during World War II.

Sai Yok National Park is home to many plants and animals. The forest is mainly made up of teak and bamboo, with a mix of evergreen and deciduous trees. Wild animals include elephants, deer, gibbons, birds, and the special Rachinee crab. Some caves and forested areas are important habitats for wildlife that are hard to see elsewhere.

The best time to visit is from June to October for the fullest waterfalls, though the park is open all year. The visitor center area has camping spots, rental tents, park bungalows, and some private raft houses. The park becomes very popular and busy on weekends and holidays with both locals and tourists.
