Saint-Jean-du-Marché
France, France
Saint-Jean-du-Marché is a small former commune in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region of northeastern France. It was merged with La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges in 1973 as part of a territorial reform.
The village, situated at an altitude of about 556 meters, is surrounded by other rural communes and lies approximately 18 kilometers southeast of the larger town of Épinal. Historically, it was part of the seigneury of Faucompierre and its name is tied to a market that dates back to at least the 13th century.
The area saw population growth in the 18th century due to agriculture and artisanal industries but experienced significant rural depopulation in the 19th century. The village has historical ruins, including those of a castle destroyed in the 15th or 16th century, and an 18th-century church.
Today, Saint-Jean-du-Marché is known for its peaceful rural character and natural surroundings within the Vosges Mountains.
