Sam Lord's Castle
Bel Air, Barbados
Sam Lord's Castle in Bel Air, St. Philip parish on Barbados' southeast coast, is a striking 1820 Georgian mansion built by notorious plantation owner and alleged pirate Samuel Hall Lord, who legend says lured ships onto nearby reefs by hanging lanterns in coconut trees to plunder their cargo.
The opulent coral-stone structure, once filled with lavish furnishings, antiques, and intricate ceilings crafted by Windsor Castle artisans, later operated as a luxury hotel until a 2010 fire gutted its interiors, leaving weathered shell-like walls amid overgrown grounds overlooking a secluded Long Bay beach.
Today it anchors the Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord's Castle All-Inclusive Resort, a cliffside property with pools, beach access, and tropical gardens where restoration efforts revive the historic site for modern stays blending pirate lore, ocean views, and all-inclusive amenities near Cave Bay.
