Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Congonhas
Congonhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil
The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Congonhas, located in the historic town of Congonhas in Minas Gerais, is one of Brazil’s most revered expressions of Baroque religious art and architecture. Constructed in the second half of the 18th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a pilgrimage complex that blends spiritual devotion with artistic brilliance.
At its heart is a Rococo-style basilica with an ornate Italian-inspired interior. But what truly sets the sanctuary apart is its dramatic outdoor stairway, adorned with 12 soapstone statues of Old Testament prophets sculpted by the legendary Aleijadinho (Antônio Francisco Lisboa), one of Brazil’s most celebrated colonial artists.
These expressive figures are considered masterpieces of emotive Baroque sculpture. Flanking the stairway are seven chapels that depict the Stations of the Cross, each filled with vivid polychrome sculptures also attributed to Aleijadinho and his workshop. These life-sized scenes are rich in detail and pathos, drawing visitors into the Passion of Christ with theatrical intensity.
Perched on Morro do Maranhão, the sanctuary offers sweeping views of Congonhas and the surrounding hills. It remains a site of deep religious significance, especially during Holy Week, when thousands of pilgrims gather for processions and rituals.
