Sandomierz Castle
Sandomierz, Poland, Poland
Sandomierz Castle is a historic royal fortress in Sandomierz, southeastern Poland, perched on a hill overlooking the Vistula River.
Originally constructed in the 14th century by Casimir the Great on the site of a 10th-century stronghold, it featured Gothic elements like an octagonal tower and served as a key princely residence.
Expanded in the 16th century under Sigismund I the Old and Sigismund II Augustus into a Renaissance residence with arcaded cloisters and four wings, it was largely destroyed by Swedish forces in 1656, leaving mainly the west wing intact.
Rebuilt multiple times, it later functioned as a prison and now houses the District Museum with exhibits on regional history and archaeology.
