The Sankoré Madrasah, located in Timbuktu, Mali, was one of the most famous centers of Islamic learning in medieval Africa and formed part of Timbuktu’s renowned network of scholarly institutions alongside the Djinguereber and Sidi Yahya mosques. Founded between the 14th and 15th centuries, it grew into a major hub for education, attracting scholars and students from across West Africa and the wider Islamic world. The madrasah was known for its teaching of theology, law, mathematics, astronomy, literature, and other subjects, helping establish Timbuktu as a center of knowledge and manuscript production during the height of the Mali Empire and later the Songhai Empire. Its scholars maintained extensive libraries and contributed greatly to the intellectual and cultural life of the region. Built in the distinctive Sudano-Sahelian style, the Sankoré Madrasah remains a symbol of Africa’s rich scholarly heritage. Today, it is part of the historic monuments of Timbuktu, recognized by UNESCO for their outstanding cultural and historical significance.
