Sidi Bou Said is a cliff‑top village about 20 kilometers northeast of Tunis, Tunisia, perched above the Gulf of Tunis and the Mediterranean Sea. It is named after the 13th‑century Sufi saint Abu Said al‑Baji, whose tomb and a zawiya (religious lodge) helped anchor a small settlement that gradually grew into an elite coastal retreat. The town is famous for its distinctive blue‑and‑white architecture, with whitewashed walls, blue doors and shutters, flowering bougainvillea, and narrow cobbled streets that lead to panoramic sea views. In 1915, local residents and cultural patrons secured a decree to protect its architectural style, helping make Sidi Bou Said one of Tunisia’s earliest preserved heritage villages and now a UNESCO‑listed site in the country’s tentative World Heritage list. Today it is one of the most photographed places in Tunisia, known for its cafés serving mint tea, art galleries, traditional houses turned museums, and its role as a picturesque day‑trip destination from Tunis.
