Sorø Monastery Church
Sorø, Denmark, Denmark
Sorø Monastery Church in Sorø, Denmark, is a striking example of early Gothic brick architecture built between 1160 and 1180, making it one of Denmark's first brick structures and its third-longest medieval church.
Founded by Bishop Absalon, who replaced Benedictine monks with Cistercians from Esrum Abbey in 1161, it became Denmark's wealthiest monastery and served as a mausoleum for the noble Hvide family, including Absalon himself behind the main altar, as well as kings Christopher II, Valdemar IV Atterdag, and Oluf II.
The red-brick interior boasts high vaulted ceilings, tall windows, over 100 coat-of-arms friezes, and medieval frescoes, with later updates from Frederick III's era, all set within the scenic Sorø Academy grounds.
