Star Mosque (Tara Masjid)

Dhaka, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh

The Star Mosque (Tara Masjid), located in the Armanitola area of Old Dhaka, is one of the most beautiful and distinctive mosques in Bangladesh.

Built in the first half of the 19th century by Mirza Ghulam Pir, the mosque is famous for its stunning decorative style and intricate mosaic work. Its name, “Star Mosque,” comes from the countless blue star motifs that adorn its walls, domes, and arches. In the 1920s, merchant Ali Jan Bepari renovated the mosque, adding elaborate Chini Tikri mosaic decorations made from porcelain and ceramic pieces, which gave the building its sparkling and unique appearance.

Today, the Star Mosque is both an active place of worship and a treasured heritage site. Renowned for its elegant blend of Mughal architecture and colorful mosaic artistry, it remains one of the most iconic landmarks in Dhaka and a favorite attraction for visitors interested in history, architecture, and culture.
