Tallinn Botanic Garden
Tallinn, Estonia, Estonia
Tallinn Botanic Garden (Estonian: Tallinna Botaanikaaed) is Estonia’s largest botanical garden, located 10 kilometers east of Tallinn’s city center in the Kloostrimetsa forest along the right bank of the Pirita River in the Pirita district.
Covering 40 hectares across four terraces of the Pirita River valley, it features winding paths, nine ponds, and over 8,000 plant varieties, making it the most unique and species-rich collection in Estonia. Established on December 1, 1961, as an institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR, the garden opened its outdoor collections to visitors in 1970 and its greenhouse collections in 1971, and since 2005 has been managed by the Tallinn Environment Department.
The garden includes approximately 6,500 outdoor taxons and varieties in collections such as an arboretum, rose garden (rosary), rock garden, perennials, bulbous plants, and annuals, plus around 2,000 tropical and subtropical plant taxons in modern glasshouses covering 2,000 m².
It also houses a herbarium with over 95,000 specimens (established in 1962) and a library, conducts environmental research since 1965, and offers two nature trails—a 3.9 km botanic garden trail and a 2.5 km Kloostrimetsa marsh trail—making it an excellent place for walking, relaxation, and picnics.
