Teatro Amazonas
Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil
Teatro Amazonas, or the Amazon Theatre, is a dazzling cultural jewel nestled in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in Manaus, Brazil. Inaugurated on December 31, 1896, this Renaissance Revival opera house was born from the opulence of the rubber boom, when Manaus aspired to become a beacon of European sophistication in the tropics.
The theater’s architecture is a marvel of imported elegance: its dome is adorned with 36,000 ceramic tiles in the colors of the Brazilian flag, shipped from Alsace, France. Inside, Carrara marble staircases, Murano glass chandeliers, and Parisian furnishings evoke the grandeur of 19th-century Europe.
The curtain, painted by Brazilian artist Crispim do Amaral, depicts the confluence of the Rio Negro and Solimões Rivers — a poetic nod to the region’s natural majesty.
