Ternand is a picturesque medieval village located in the Rhône department in eastern France, about 38 kilometers from Lyon, nestled in the Beaujolais region known for its golden stones, or "pierres dorées," that give the buildings a distinctive warm hue.

The village is perched on a rocky promontory overlooking vineyards and wooded slopes of the Azergues valley and retains much of its historical charm with narrow streets winding through old houses, the remains of a 12th-century castle keep, and a 15th-century church dedicated to the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.

Historically, it was a fortified stronghold under the influence of the Archbishops of Lyon, with medieval ramparts that still hint at its defensive past.
