The Castle in Janowiec on the Vistula
Janowiec, Poland, Poland
The Castle in Janowiec on the Vistula is a Renaissance bastion fortress overlooking the river in eastern Poland, built between 1508 and 1526 by Crown Hetman Mikołaj Firlej on a steep hillside as a defensive residence for his powerful family.
Expanded by his son Piotr and later owners like the Tarło and Lubomirski magnates—with Italian architect Santi Gucci Fiorentino designing cloistered courtyards and a grand southern palace wing in the late 16th century—it featured an irregular 121x71-meter polygon layout with gatehouse bastions, corner towers, dry moat, and opulent interiors hosting kings like Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki.
Ravaged by Swedes during the 1655 Deluge and neglected through partitions and wars, its picturesque ruins now form a museum with preserved Gothic chapel, arcades, and panoramic views opposite Kazimierz Dolny, symbolizing Poland's Golden Age nobility.
