Tours de Merle
Saint-Geniez-ô-Merle, France, France
Tours de Merle is a remarkable medieval fortress complex located near the village of Saint-Geniez-ô-Merle in the Corrèze department of southwestern France.
Built between the 12th and 15th centuries on a rocky spur above the Maronne River, it consists of several towers, castles, chapels, and defensive structures that once formed a powerful fortified settlement. Unlike most castles, Tours de Merle was shared by several noble families, creating a unique co-lordship where multiple fortified residences stood within the same site.
At its height, the complex included seven castles and served as an important stronghold during the medieval period. Surrounded by forests and dramatic river scenery, the ruins are known for their impressive towers, panoramic viewpoints, and picturesque setting. The site is protected as a historic monument and is considered one of the most significant medieval landmarks in the Limousin region.
Today, visitors can explore the fortress ruins, medieval gardens, walking trails, and historical exhibits, making Tours de Merle a popular destination for those interested in history, architecture, and nature.
