Vieng Xai Caves, located in Houaphanh Province in northeastern Laos, are one of the country’s most important historical sites.

During the Laotian Civil War and the wider Second Indochina War, an extensive network of around 480 limestone caves served as a hidden underground city for the Pathet Lao. More than 20,000 people lived, worked, studied, and received medical care inside the caves while the region was subjected to heavy bombing. The caves housed residences, government offices, hospitals, schools, bakeries, shops, and even a theater, demonstrating how a complete community functioned underground during wartime.

Notable sites include the caves used by Kaysone Phomvihane and Prince Souphanouvong, two key leaders of the Lao revolutionary movement. Today, Vieng Xai Caves are a major cultural and historical attraction, offering visitors a powerful insight into Laos’s wartime past and the resilience of its people. Set amid scenic limestone mountains and valleys, they combine striking natural beauty with an extraordinary chapter of modern history.
