Wangenbourg-Engenthal is a picturesque mountain commune in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, northeastern France.
Located in the Vosges Mountains about 45 kilometers west of Strasbourg, it consists of several small hamlets surrounded by forests, valleys, and scenic highlands. The area is often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Alsace” because of its beautiful landscapes and dispersed mountain settlements.
The commune is known for the ruins of the medieval Château de Wangenbourg, which overlooks the surrounding countryside, as well as its rich natural environment. More than 80% of the territory is forested, and the nearby Schneeberg is one of the highest peaks in the area. Today, Wangenbourg-Engenthal is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, offering extensive hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing trails.
