Whistler is a world-famous resort municipality in British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, located about 125 km (78 mi) north of Vancouver along the scenic Sea to Sky Highway, and it is best known for hosting alpine skiing and snowboarding on Whistler Blackcomb, the largest ski resort in North America with over 8,100 acres of skiable terrain, more than 200 marked trails, 38 lifts and the longest ski season in Canada. The town receives more than two million visitors each year, drawn by its award-winning pedestrian-only Whistler Village at the base of the mountains, which features west-coast-style chalets, boutique shops, restaurants and the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre celebrating the area’s Indigenous heritage. In summer, Whistler transforms into a hub for mountain biking on world-class trails, hiking, golf, camping and lake activities, while winter offers skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, sledding and the record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola that links Whistler and Blackcomb mountains high above the valley. Whistler gained global prominence as the host of most alpine, Nordic, bobsled, luge and skeleton events at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and it remains a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts and discerning travelers in a setting of glacier-fed lakes, old-growth forests and dramatic peaks.
