Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, Canada, sits at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, serving as the province's largest city with around 750,000 residents and a key hub for transportation, commerce, and culture in the Canadian Prairies.

Long a gathering place for Indigenous peoples like the Anishinaabe and Cree, it evolved from 18th-century fur trading posts such as Fort Rouge built by French explorer La Vérendrye in 1738, through the 1812 Red River Settlement by Scottish colonists, to formal incorporation as a city in 1873 amid the Red River Resistance led by Louis Riel, which helped form Manitoba. 

Rapid growth followed the 1881 Canadian Pacific Railway arrival, dubbing it the "Chicago of the North" as wheat trade boomed, attracting diverse immigrants and fostering landmarks like The Forks market site, though it faced challenges from floods, economic shifts, and urban amalgamation in 1972.
